DCV Gelberman, one of New York District's three drift collection vessels, hosted some familiar faces Monday when relatives of the vessel's late namesake, Jacob "Jack" Gelberman, paid a visit. Three generations of Gelberman's family were there including his son-in-law, granddaughter and great grandchildren. The boat was named in honor of the late Jack Gelberman, who chief of operations for New York District from 1961 until he died in 1973.
The family members rode along as the boat carried out its normal duties in and around the New York/New Jersey Harbor, like collecting floatables and debris that could be hazardous to navigation and/or the environment. They also got to talk with the crew and get a sense of what the boat, that carries their family's name, does every day.
"I don't want to lose touch with the boat," said Katy Gibney, Gelberman's granddaughter who actually broke the champagne bottle at DCV Gelberman's christening in 1981 at the South Street Seaport in Manhattan. She said it had been six years since her last time seeing DCV Gelberman, and at that time one of her daughters was still and infant and their youngest son hadn't been born yet.

The Newark Star-Ledger recently produced an interesting video about DCV Gelberman and its mission in and around the NY/NJ Harbor.
