The highly developed communities along the south shore of Long Island, NY, from Jones Inlet to East Rockaway Inlet, have experienced major flooding during storms. In 1960, Hurricane Donna forced 300 families to evacuate the area. If Donna occurred today, it would cost residents over $20 million in damages (1994 price levels).
