DESCRIPTION: This navigation asset is located in Monmouth County, NJ and consists of an entrance channel, 8 feet depth, 150 feet wide, and about 2,500 feet (0.45 mile) long, from the 8-foot contour in Sandy Hook Bay to the entrance of the small boat harbor at Leonardo, NJ

AUTHORIZATION:  Rivers and Harbors Act 1945 (P.L 79-14), and modified in 1950 (P.L. 81-516).

COMMERCE: This asset serves as a Harbor of Refuge during storms, and supports an New Jersey State marina (i.e. Leonardo State Marina) with a publicly accessible boat ramp and a berth capacity of approximately 175 boat slips.  This asset also supports recreational fishing, including several charting businesses.           

BACKGROUND: The last maintenance dredging cycle was performed in Fiscal Year (FY) 2015 when approximately 38,000 cubic yards of dredging material was removed and beneficially used at a state-approved upland site in New Jersey.  Prior to that, the channel was maintenance dredged in FY1991, when approximately 59,000 CY of dredged material was removed and placed on Leonardo Beach, east of the channel entrance.

STATUS: This navigation asset is currently in caretaker status.  Production of an annual hydrographic channel condition survey, and publication of a controlling depth report on the District’s website (https://www.nan.usace.army.mil/Missions/Navigation/Controlling-Depth-Reports/) is scheduled for FY2025.
