FACT SHEET- Herkimer NY Sec 205

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District
Published March 23, 2021

DESCRIPTION: The project site is located along Bellinger Brook in the town of Herkimer, NY. Flooding, and erosion and storm damage concerns the community. The observed problem revolves upstream of an existing USACE project, where the water overflows in several locations along the Bellinger Brook.  Many structures have been impacted, especially during the June 2013 storm event.  The capacity within the channel to handle the amount of flow during a storm event is limited. Based on the area visited, there appears to be federal interest upstream of the Village of Herkimer constructed USACE Flood Control Project. A high risk area was identified at the Bellinger Brook/ Church St. and W German St.  intersection.  The state or county will need to be identified as sponsor for this Continuing Authorities Program (CAP) Section 205 assistance opportunity.

AUTHORIZATION:  Section 205 of the Flood Control Act of 1946, as amended [33 U.S.C. 701(r)].

STATUS: A Federal Interest Determination Report determined federal interest under the Sec 205 CAP program. The Town of Herkimer was approached to act as non-federal sponsor, but declined at.  Additional work in the Herkimer area was carried out under the PL 84-99 program (Inspection of Completed Works) and managed out of the New York District Operations Division.

CAP FEDERAL INTEREST DETERMINATION PHASE COST:

Estimated Federal $100,000

Estimated Non-Federal $0
