DESCRIPTION: This navigation asset provides for a channel 40 feet deep, 1,200 feet wide from the Narrows to Bay Ridge Avenue; thence 1,750 feet wide to the junction of Bay Ridge and Red Hook Channels, and thence 1,200 feet wide through to its junction with Buttermilk Channel. The length is about 4 miles.
AUTHORIZATION: The Federal navigation project for the Bay Ridge and Red Hook Channels, New York was adopted in 1899 and modified in 1930. COMMERCE: This asset supports deep-draft commercial navigation to the Port of New York and New Jersey. In 2016, approximately 856 thousand short tons of freight traffic was transported through this navigation channel. Commodities included residual fuel oil, concrete and cement, and manufactured machinery and equipment.. STATUS: During FY18, the project will be in caretaker status including monitoring of the channel shoaling conditions, coordination with the users and stakeholders. Funds will be used for caretaker activities and to begin preliminary Engineering and Design.
BACKGROUND: The deep-draft high-use channel project was impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Funding under Public Law 113-2 (Hurricane Sandy Recovery Supplemental Appropriations Act) was used to restore the channel to depth needed by users of South Brooklyn Marine Terminal. In Fiscal Year 2018, financial and administrative closeout of the maintenance dredging contract will be performed. Prior dredging occurred in May 1989, when 801,000 cubic yards of dredged material was dredged from the channel and placed at the Mud Dump Site. Project is dredged approximately every 10-15 years. The project will be maintenance dredged according to the needs of the channels users, thereby assuring safe and economical use of the Bay Ridge and Red Hook Channels, New York by shipping interests. Next maintenance dredging cycle is anticipated for 2025.
