New York - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District announces the availability of the Draft Supplemental Environmental Assessment (Draft SEA) and Draft Statement of Conformity (DSOC) for the Lake Montauk Harbor, East Hampton, New York Navigation Improvement Project, and the opening of the window for the public to submit written comments regarding them.
The Lake Montauk Harbor project was authorized for construction under Section 107 of the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1960 as amended (33 U.S.C. Section 577) and was previously assessed in the 2020 Final Feasibility Report and Environmental Assessment. During the preconstruction, engineering and design phase of the project, changes in existing conditions necessitated changes to design, which required additional assessment as documented in the DSEA.
Public comments on DSEA and DSOC regarding this proposed work should be submitted to:
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District
Planning Division, 17th Floor – Environmental Branch (ATTN: Ms. Sophie Killy)
26 Federal Plaza, New York, New York 10278-0090
Public comments can also be submitted by e-mail to: Sophie.r.killy@usace.army.mil
Comments received by June 27, 2025 regarding the DSEA will assist in the agency’s evaluation of the project changes and will be reflected in the project record.
The Lake Montauk Harbor Navigation Improvement Project is a partnership between the Army Corps of Engineers and the Town of East Hampton. The proposed project calls for the deepening of the Lake Montauk Harbor channel and deposition basin to -17’ MLLW, placing 110,000 cubic yards of sandy dredged material between the upland and nearshore areas of the downdrift eroded beach, and placement of 15,000 cubic yards of hard material at the Mattituck Artificial Reef site.
Pending the Supplemental Environmental Assessment, the Corps will award a construction contract for the Lake Montauk Harbor project later this fall.
