U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awards $8.6 million maintenance dredging contract for work along Hudson River

Published Sept. 8, 2014

NEW YORK – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, has awarded an $8.6 million contract to Great Lakes Dredge and Dock of Oak Brook, Illinois, to carry out maintenance dredging at three discontinuous reaches along the Hudson River Federal Navigation Channel between Coxsackie and Albany.

The dredging will focus on shoals in the channel identified through hydrographic surveys and remove roughly 220,000 cubic yards of material from the Nutten Hook (River Mile 124), Stuyvesant (River Mile 128) and Staats Point (River Mile 138) sections of the Hudson River to assure safe and economical use of the Hudson River by shipping interests.

"This Hudson River dredging is important for maintaining safe navigation along this important channel," said New York District Commander Col. Paul Owen. "This work will help ensure continued safe passage for the increasing number of vessels moving between New York City and port facilities in and around the state’s capital in Albany."

The dredged material from this project will be placed in the federally owned upland placement site on Houghtaling Island, New Baltimore, New York (River Mile 130).

The Contractor is expected to begin construction of the upland placement site during September and commence dredging in October.   All dredging will be completed by the end of this year, with any remaining work in the placement site completed by the end of summer in 2015.

Maintenance dredging of the Hudson River Federal Navigation Channel is performed every two years at various locations where shoaling has reduced the depth of the river and adversely impacted safe navigation.

The work is fully federally funded, with partial funds coming from the Disaster Relief Appropriations Act of 2013, also known as the Hurricane Sandy Relief Bill.

These figures show the areas of the Hudson River where maintenance dredging will be performed, including the Nutten Hook area, just north of Coxsackie; the Stuyvesant area, just north of Stuyvesant; and the Staats Point area, between Castleton-on-Hudson and Albany.
