CAMP HERO
The former Camp Hero site is located in Montauk, Suffolk County, New York and was used for various training activities during the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Spanish American War, World War I, and World War II.
After World War II, the facility was closed, but a portion was acquired and renamed the Montauk Air Force Station. At the station, the 773’d Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron used the land as a firing range and field exercise area. Later, the squadron would use it to provide surveillance data of air traffic in the area.
By 1984 the facility was closed and all of the property was transferred to state, local, and Federal agencies.
Today, most of the 468.69-acre park – known as Camp Hero State Park - is under the jurisdiction of the Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation. The land is mostly undeveloped and is open to the public for recreation.
The US Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) is conducting work at the site under the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites (DERP-FUDS).
The Corps has conducted several studies and response actions at the former Camp Hero over the years. As a result, underground storage tanks and transformers were removed and buildings were demolished.
Presently, the Corps is performing remedial investigation field work to see if further action is needed on the site. A report is expected to be issued in 2017.
