Madison Barracks Target Range

The former Madison Barracks Target Range is located within the town limits of Henderson, Jefferson County, New York.

The land is publicly owned, and is part of Wehle State Park.

The property was used by the U.S Army between 1885 and 1947 as a troop training and staging area, and a portion of the property was used as a practice target range for small arms training.

During a site inspection, munitions debris from expended bullet slugs were found. Soil sampling was performed and the results showed elevated levels of lead.

Based on these findings, further site investigation will be conducted on the Madison Barracks Target Range area, subject to availability of funds.

The US Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) is conducting work at the site under the Defense Environmental Restoration Program for Formerly Used Defense Sites (DERP-FUDS).
