Forge River Watershed

The Forge River is located in the town of Brookhaven on the South Shore of Long Island near the Village of Mastic in Suffolk County, New York.  The river has been classified by the NYSDEC as an impaired waterway.  Discoloration and odor suggest that the waterway has deteriorated and may pose a health and safety risk to users and nearby communities.  Areas of the river are experiencing erosion, alterations to landforms along the banks and sediment rich in nutrients may be the result of history of duck farming along the river, and other possible groundwater intrusion sources.
