  • Army Corps Completes Emergency Dredging

    NEW YORK –The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, has completed contracted emergency dredging of an interim 200-foot-wide deep-water passage of ten feet through the highly dynamic Moriches Inlet. This out-of-cycle emergency work was done to remove the hazardous sand shoals that were closing the inlet and preventing U.S. Coast Guard Search and Rescue vessels from using the inlet to respond to lifesaving missions within Moriches Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, following a series of four unusual Nor’easter storms in March of 2018.

  • Army Corps begins emergency dredging of Moriches Inlet with sand beneficially reused at Smith Point County Park Pavilion

    NEW YORK -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, has begun emergency dredging of Moriches Inlet navigation channel to remove hazardous shoals, a shallow formation of sand that is a navigation or grounding hazard to U.S. Coast Guard and recreational vessels, following a series of Nor’easters from March 2018. These conditions have created a safety issue, making it difficult for U.S. Coast Guard Search and Rescue boats to respond to lifesaving missions within Moriches Bay or the Atlantic Ocean in this portion of the region.

  • Army Corps Announces Additional Public Meetings for NY&NJHAT Study – Extends Public Comment Period

    NEW YORK – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), New York District in cooperation with non-federal sponsors, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection announces the extension of the public comment period and additional public meetings for the New York/New Jersey Harbors and Tributaries Focus Area Feasibility Study. This coastal storm risk management study (CSRM) covers the New York & New Jersey Harbor and tidally affected tributaries encompassing all of New York City, the Hudson River to Troy, NY; the lower Passaic, Hackensack, Rahway, and Raritan Rivers; and the Upper and Lower Bays of New York Harbor, Newark, Jamaica, Raritan and Sandy Hook Bays; the Kill Van Kull, Arthur Kill and East River tidal straits; and western Long Island Sound.

  • Army Corps Announces Public Meetings for Rockaway Study with Revised Recommended Plan

    NEW YORK – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District in cooperation with the non-federal and local sponsors, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the City of New York, respectively, is holding public meetings to provide study information and solicit comments on the revised Recommended Plan for the Atlantic Coast of New York, East Rockaway Inlet to Rockaway Inlet, and Jamaica Bay Reformulation Study. The Revised Draft HSGRR incorporates comments received on the 2016 Draft HSGRR and is updated to reflect the subsequent changes to the Recommend Plan for addressing coastal storm risk for the communities surrounding Jamaica Bay and along the Atlantic Shorefront of the Rockaway peninsula.

    The Army Corps announces the availability of the “Revised Draft Integrated Hurricane Sandy General Re-evaluation Report/Environmental Impact Statement, and revised General Conformity Determination” for Rockaway, East Rockaway, and Jamaica Bay.

  • Army Corps contractor begins moving equipment to Moriches Inlet

    NEW YORK -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contractor Weeks Marine Inc., of Cranford, N.J. has begun before-dredging surveys of the Moriches Inlet and bay. The first of three tug-boat shipments of submergible pipe has arrived on August 25, 2018. Two more shipments of equipment are scheduled to arrive within the next couple of weeks, which all together will comprise the needed five-mile pipeline.

    NEW YORK – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) New York District, and partner agencies requests public input regarding the scope of the NY & NJ Harbors and Tributaries Study. Partners include, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) New York District, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), and the City of New York (NYC) will host five (5) scoping meetings for the New York and New Jersey Harbor & Tributaries Study (NYNJHAT). The meetings are being held pursuant to the requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
