NEW YORK – Crews working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, began placing nearly 3 million cubic yards of sand onto Rockaway Beach in recent weeks as part of the second of two major sand placement contracts to repair and restore the engineered beach there to reduce coastal storm risks to the community there, which was left even more vulnerable to coastal storms after Hurricane Sandy.
