Representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, participated in Branch Week held in September at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y. Branch Week was an event where cadets pursuing their military education at the U.S. Military Academy had an opportunity to become familiar with the different Branches within the U.S. Army.

Army Corps Demonstrates Commitment to Coastal Flood Risk Reduction

On a summer morning as the temperature soared towards 90 degrees, residents and tourists alike along the shore of Long Island, N.Y., filled a stretch of beach before 9:30 a.m. and enjoyed the surf, sun rays and cooling breezes off the Atlantic Ocean. These recreational benefits are a byproduct of a recently-completed flood-risk reduction project in downtown Montauk conducted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, that provides a wider beach.

Army Corps builds foundation for resiliency

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District is working on the Port Monmouth Flood Risk Management Project in New Jersey that will make the Port Monmouth community more resilient during future storm flooding and surge. The project includes an environmentally friendly soil stabilization process that has never been used by the Corps before on a flood risk management project. The process makes the project stronger, improves the community’s quality of life, and saves tax-dollars.

Army Corps vessel with a big job steams on during parade of ships

NEW YORK-The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) drift collection vessel the DCV GELBERMAN helped kick off what was an epic scene along the Hudson River earlier this week. As scores of people stood on Engeldrum Bluff at Fort Hamilton the DCV GELBERMAN carried the American flag during with pride, a USACE New York District tradition. USACE crews on board the DCV GELBERMAN work day in and day out to keep the Hudson River and other essential federal navigation channels open and vacant of dangers. “The crew takes pride in keeping the navigation channel free and clear from hazards.” Said Colonel David A. Caldwell, Commander, USACE, New York District.

Army Corps of Engineers celebrate Environmental Day 2017

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, participated in the celebration of Environmental Day 2017 at the Peterstown Community Center in Elizabeth, N.J. The event was hosted by the Elizabeth River /Arthur Kill Watershed Association. Over 150 local school students attended the event, with this year’s focus on bringing awareness to the community about environmental concerns and solutions in the metropolitan region of New York City.

The Army Corps of Engineers Identifies a Tentatively Selected Plan for the Rahway River Basin Feasibility Study

The Rahway River is approximately 24 miles long and is a tributary of the Arthur Kill at the heart of the New York-New Jersey Harbor Estuary. The highly urbanized river watershed suffers from frequent flooding due to extensive development and destruction of riparian wetlands and floodplains. Floods have caused damages to houses, businesses and public infrastructure.

In 2012, when Jean Lau, chief, Equal Employment Opportunity, was researching opportunities to promote women, minorities and individuals with disabilities ― one aspect of the EEO mission ― she came across a great deal of information discussing the importance of getting young people interested in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects, and programs benefiting students across the country. NY District Environmental Residency teams with U.S. EPA to clean up contamination

The New York District, headquartered in Lower Manhattan, is abuzz with activity, carrying out multiple missions at any one time (some highly visible), with nearly 350 people in Lower Manhattan office. But there’s another dimension of the District’s work that’s less visible: Contributions from staff in field offices spread across 26,500 square miles of NY, NJ, CT, MA and VT. One is the New Jersey Area Environmental Residency 30 miles south of New York City in East Brunswick, NJ, charged with remediating Superfund sites on behalf of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
