  • Army Corps Offers Update on Final Major Harbor 50 Foot Deepening Contract

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in partnership with The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey are improving the main shipping channels in the Port by deepening them to a depth of 50 feet, allowing more efficient access to the world’s largest oceangoing ships. The final major contract (S-AK-3) involves work in the Arthur Kill Channel between Elizabeth NJ and the New York Container Terminal; the Elizabeth Channel; the western 1,000 ft. of the Port Elizabeth Channel; and a small approximately two acre area in the Kill Van Kull Channel off of Bayonne NJ.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District will be completing the second and final Phase of coastal storm risk reduction work at Plumb Beach in Brooklyn along the Belt Parkway through most of the rest of the calendar year, which will lead to beach and parking lot closures as well as a bike lane detour.

    YAPHANK, N.Y. – Debris collection crews on Fire Island will start their second and final pass through all communities on Tuesday, March 26. Property owners are strongly urged to move all debris to the edge of their property BY MONDAY NIGHT, where it's easily accessible in order to speed up removal. There will be no additional collections once debris crews have moved through your neighborhood.

    YAPHANK, N.Y. – Starting this evening, residents on Fire Island will notice the debris removal crews setting up lights and generators and taking other steps to safely conduct nighttime debris removal from rights of way. This is a push to be able to meet the end of March completion goal.

  • Fire Island cleanup begins 24-hour operations

    YAPHANK, N.Y. – Removal of Hurricane Sandy debris on Fire Island began March 2 and is scheduled to be complete by the end of March. In an effort to meet the March 31 completion goal, the debris removal contractors will begin work around the clock March 15. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is overseeing the debris removal project as part of the federal government's Sandy recovery efforts.
